Job Description

Estimators play a pivotal role in the financial planning and project management aspects of a company, especially within industries that require detailed projections on costs and timelines. These professionals are essential for organizations that aim to stay competitive by ensuring that all financial aspects of a project are accurately forecasted and managed. An estimator is responsible for compiling and analyzing data on all the factors that influence cost such as materials, labor, location, and duration, providing comprehensive insights that are crucial for making informed business decisions.

Candidate Requirements

The primary responsibility of an estimator is to estimate the time, money, materials, and labor required to manufacture a product, construct a building, or provide a service. This role requires a strong understanding of project requirements and the ability to work closely with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure accurate project specifications. Key tasks include:

Reviewing plans and specifications to prepare a comprehensive project estimate.
Collaborating with engineers, architects, clients, and contractors to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues.
Assessing cost effectiveness and identifying potential financial risks.
Analyzing data collected from job sites, vendors, and other stakeholders to compile detailed cost information.
Preparing detailed reports or bids for submission to project stakeholders.
Adjusting estimates and recommendations based on changes and updates to projects.
Maintaining records of estimated and actual costs.
Education and Certification Requirements
Most employers require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as construction management, engineering, or mathematics. However, significant industry experience and a deeper understanding of cost estimation software and principles may substitute for formal education qualifications in some cases. Additionally, professional certifications such as Certified Cost Professional (CCP) or Certified Estimator Technician (CET) are highly valued and can significantly enhance a candidate's prospects. Prospective estimators must have:

Strong analytical and numeracy skills.
Proficiency in MS Office and estimation software such as CostX or Buildsoft.
Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings and technical doents.
Experience with databases and project management software.
