Job Description

A Quantity Surveyor (QS) is a professional within the construction industry responsible for managing all costs relating to building and civil engineering projects. Their goal is to ensure that a project is completed within the budget while meeting all quality standards. Here are the main responsibilities and tasks of a Quantity Surveyor:


Candidate Requirements

Key Roles of a Quantity Surveyor:

1. Cost Estimation: Estimating and monitoring construction costs, including materials, labour, and equipment. They prepare detailed cost plans during all stages of a project.


2. Budget Management: Ensuring that projects remain within budget by tracking expenses and adjusting projections as needed.


3. Contract Administration: Managing contracts between clients and contractors, ensuring that terms are adhered to. This includes preparing tender doents, contract terms, and evaluating bids from contractors.


4. Valuation of Work: Carrying out valuations for interim payments to contractors and ensuring the work is being completed according to the project’s progress.


5. Risk Management: Identifying potential risks (e.g., material shortages, labour costs) that could impact the project’s cost and finding ways to mitigate them.


6. Procurement: Advising on the best procurement strategy for the project and helping select appropriate contractors and suppliers.


7. Feasibility Studies: Conducting feasibility studies to determine the financial viability of a project before work begins.


8. Cost Control and Reporting: Regularly providing reports on financial progress and ensuring that costs are managed as the project evolves.


9. Dispute Resolution: Assisting in resolving disputes that arise over contractual or financial matters.


10. Final Accounts: Preparing and agreeing on final accounts and closing out the project’s financial aspects once completed.
