Pharmacy Assistant
Position Overview
A Pharmacy Assistant supports pharmacists in dispensing medications, managing inventory, assisting customers, and performing administrative tasks. They ensure smooth pharmacy operations while maintaining compliance with health regulations and providing excellent customer service.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
1. Customer Service
Greet customers and respond to inquiries about medications and products
Assist customers with over-the-counter (OTC) products and prescriptions
Provide information on proper medication use, storage, and dosage as directed by a pharmacist
Handle customer complaints and escalate issues to the pharmacist as needed
2. Prescription Handling
Receive and prepare prescription orders under pharmacist supervision
Verify prescription details for accuracy (with pharmacist oversight)
Assist in labeling and packaging medications
Maintain confidentiality of patient information
3. Inventory & Stock Management
Monitor and manage pharmacy stock levels, including OTC and prescription medications
Receive, unpack, and store new stock according to safety regulations
Check for expired or damaged medications and ensure proper disposal
Assist in stocktaking and inventory audits
4. Administrative Duties
Maintain accurate records of prescriptions, sales, and stock movements
Update customer and patient records in the pharmacy system
Assist in billing, payment processing, and insurance doentation
Support pharmacy staff in daily operational tasks
5. Compliance & Safety
Follow pharmacy policies, procedures, and safety standards
Ensure all medications are stored correctly and securely
Adhere to local health authority regulations and pharmacy laws
Participate in pharmacy audits and inspections as required
Qualifications
High school diploma minimum; diploma in pharmacy assistance or healthcare-related field preferred
Previous experience in a pharmacy, healthcare, or retail setting is an advantage
Basic knowledge of health and safety standards
Certification in Pharmacy Assistant or related short course (optional but preferred)
